I'm not really buying that GOP's are strategic masterminds that have a blue print that could be copied. They got lucky in 2016, lucky that they got to replace 3 SC judges during the window they had the white house and then lost all the houses in 2020.
No one in the GOP wanted Trump as their guy in 2016. He surprised everyone by having a message that resonated through the rust belt.
RBG not resigning, and trying to force Clinton in as the one were the two things the Democrats had some control of that could have saved the court.
At this time in the 2020 election cycle, the GOP was about as excited having Trump as their candidate as the DNC is now. The GOP didn't do anything about it and had actual mechanisms to do it through the impeachment hearing.
