If Kane doesn't play next season, his career will likely be over but if he plays next season, he might be able to earn another contract and get another few years of NHL paycheques.

I think this is the big difference between the two. Kane is probably unwilling to be done with this contract, and I am willing to bet his ego has him believing he has another few years of good contracts left in him. Humble is not a term I think anyone has used about Kane in his life. This means that he probably isn't okay just sitting out when he knows he will need to show he can perform for another contract. The other thing is both Vegas and TB players had legitimate surgeries to provide cover for cap shenanigans. Is Kane willing to have an actual unnecessary surgery just for the oilers, who he has started to battle with this season, at the risk of both his physically abilities as well as future contracts?
