In theory, the Oilers would only trade the 2026 pick to bolster their team for the playoffs next year, so they wouldn't expect their 2025 to be top-12 anyway.
Best case scenario would be if they're just outside a Wildcard spot at the deadline next year and move their 2026 first to try to improve down the stretch, but instead they falter and drop into top-10 draft pick territory and are forced to give it to Philly.
Even better: Flames finish 32nd, Oilers miss the playoffs by a point. Oilers win the draft lottery from 16th and move up 10 spots to 6th -- which goes to Philly, and the Flames get 1st overall despite the Oilers winning the lottery.
