Well IMO that's the future for consoles. Consoles made sense when they were a few hundred bucks and computers were substantially much much more. When the console wars really started mid 90s a console could be had for a few hundred bucks vs a entry level of a pc off 800 (1500 today with Inflation).
There will always be a "console". It's just going to be a low priced pc. The writing is kind of on the wall. With thability to emulated, Sony dosen't really release exclusives any more that won't eventually come to pc. Microsoft stopped releasing pc exclusives and vice versa.
This is why Nintendo innovated and moved to a mobile handheld ( fancy tablet) platform that could be docked. It was different and unique. Now every one makes one .
All these console makers are already seeing this and you can see the shift. This is why you see them buying as many other studios and IT properties they can . This is why there are rumors of these companies losing money and interest in making these machines.
I can see microsoft and sony just turning into massive studios only.Nintendo may stay in the hand held game.
