Askarov is a high potential goalie, but he's a giant question mark with only 3 NHL games of experience.
After last year, and with their high win now expectations, they weren't looking for another question mark in net, even if he has big potential.
But with Markstrom in net for the next couple of years, it kind of makes sense that they'd offer that pick up for him. Give him a couple years behind or battling with Markstrom and transition him into the number one role.
