Class gifts are the best... Inevitably, there's some keener parent that will take it upon themselves to be the organizer, everyone sends them $40 (or whatever) and that one parent is on the hook for buying gifts, etc.

Interestingly, we had our first ever interaction with a "group gift" for one of my kids' friends a few weeks ago... Same idea, everyone throws money at a single, larger gift card (say for Chinook) and that's it... Definitely doesn't work for all ages, but as the kids get older, I think I could get used to this...
