And more than half their returning players are over 30.

They could open up some cap space this year by buying out Campbell. The cap hit for that buyout is only $1.1 million for '24-25. But it goes up to 2.3, then 2.6, in the two years when they'll need every penny to re-sign Draisaitl and McDavid.

Just when they finally got useful players in the bottom half of the roster, they're going to have to let most of them walk and replace them with whatever free agents are willing to sign cheap contracts.

Running it back is not going to be an option.
1) Trade a first round pick to off-load campbell. Sign a goalie at $1.5m. $3.5m saved. Now they have $13.5m
2) Sign three fourth liners for $4.5m. So now they have $9m
3) Sign two scrubs for $1.5. Now they have $7.5m
4) Resign Broberg, Holloway for a combined $3m.
5) They have $4.5m left for two third liners.

They can run it back...
