But that is not at all the point. He makes $12.5M per year, because he is the captain of a professional sports team. Why do athletes make that much money? Because fans pay a ####-ton for seats, merchandise, and concessions, and because broadcasters pay a giant ####-ton to air games for fans to watch. He also makes millions in endorsements, because he is the face of the league. Thousands of Oiler fans flew to FLA to watch that game in person.

He absolutely should have made an appearance to accept the trophy that was awarded to him BECAUSE IT'S HIS ####ING JOB! With greatness comes great responsibility - if it's too hard for him to skate out onto the ice, stand beside Bettman for 10 seconds to shake his hand and take some pictures, then I would say he is not worthy of the greatness bestowed upon him by his fans.
I really fail to see what his salary or his captaincy has to do with him not accepting a participation trophy. Oiler fans flew down to watch the 3 hour hockey game that was played and possibly see their team win the real trophy, not the Conn Smythe. So he's in the locker room with his team mates after losing the championship and says "hey sorry guys, brb, I know we just lost the actual trophy but I gotta skate out there and accept MY trophy. Terry from Fort Saskatchewan flew all the way down here to see me win the heralded Conn Smythe award". Like c'mon. Hockey media was desperate to bestow this trophy on him no matter what and he rightfully treated it like the joke they turned it in to.
