If it is a one way contract that type of money can set him up for the rest of his life in many ways so I can see the appeal. Plus the low cap hit makes him more appealing for staying on a NHL roster giving him some time to show his abilities and hopefully get a big contract in a few years time.
Having never really watched him as a player (as no one here has) I don't know if he is trending towards being a potentially useful player or a high draft picks that was never able to take the next step.

CF says it's one way for the first year, then two way. But really, these days, and after tax, 2.3M won't set up a 23 year old person for life. He will see half of it, then he has to pay to live in LA. To me this is a "I know I'm looking like a flop but give me a couple more years basically on an ELC".
