It is a bit of a strange contract. This contract make Turcotte seem like a guy that just wants to concentrate on hockey and sticking in the league. It's 1-way, which takes away some of the pressure of being sent down.
If he outperforms the contract by becoming a 0.5PPG player then he likely losses a couple of Million as a result, but this way he doesn't have to worry about getting paid 70-90K in the AHL for a couple of years. Maybe he needs the cash so he can help out a family member, buy a house, or pursue an investment opportunity.
Moreover, I think this makes him an even more valuable target in trade or if he hits waivers, so he gets to a place with a bigger opportunity sooner.
