There will be so many deserving tributes to Donald Sutherland in the days ahead, here is my peek behind the curtain: a friendship that started at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, where Donald was part of the broadcast of the opening ceremony. 🧵 1/7

He was supposed to leave after a few days, but he was having so much fun that he just stayed, and no one had the guts to tell him he had to leave our hotel, The Wedgewood, which the network had booked exclusively. I saw him and his wife around, but they stayed to themselves. 2/7

On the third day of the Games, I got Scotty Bowman a guest pass to the hotel. When Donald saw him come in, he joined us for breakfast, where he and Scotty bonded over hockey, baseball, sports and the many people they both knew from Montreal. It was amazing to witness. 3/7

From that day on, Donald and I had breakfast together and even attended some Olympic events when I had time off. My mom, a huge fan of his, was very impressed, and thought this was the pinnacle of my career. When I told him that, he said: “Well, say hello to her for me.” 4/7

Sure enough, the next day I was in the hotel lobby on the phone with her and said “Donald Sutherland said to say hello.” My Mom, ever dubious, said “No he didn’t.” “He did,” I said, exasperated. Suddenly, there was a tap on my shoulder, Donald was standing right behind me. 5/7

He gestured for me to hand him the phone, I whispered her name and he said to her in that unmistakable voice: “Hello Florence, this is Donald Sutherland. You should be very proud of your son.” There was a long pause and he said “Hello?” I was afraid she had fallen over dead. 6/7

My Mom was completely rattled, but they had a brief chat, he winked and handed me the phone back. One of my favourite memories of the Vancouver Games was getting to know him and his wife Francine, who was also lovely. I’m thinking of her and Donald’s family today. 7/7
