If I were the GM, then I would want my players playing as though they're fighting for a playoff spot every single night. It's a lot easier to work harder, and not take nights off when you're working towards a set goal. It sets the team's culture in a way... Of a team that works hard and never gives up despite being the underdogs(sounds like a familiar narrative, similar to make the playoffs and anything can happen).
That in turn would increase the players' value, and create less trade requests that might become a distraction and force Conroy's hand like it happened with the Zadorov trade, and to an extent with both Toffoli and now Markstrom.
