Feel free to find all the trades where an UFA returned a top ten pick even with a contract shortly after. Utah wouldn’t need to put up the 6th overall to get the privilege of signing Marner to a huge contract especially when the list of teams Marner would waive for and can afford his cap hit is probably two or three.
Would be a different story if Marner had a couple years left on his contract.
