I echo Bingo's sentiments, but I would also like to remind people that his offence is "Questionable", rather than "Non-existent".
I feel strongly that it is hard to stat-watch this kid and come away thinking that he doesn't have offence, while ignoring the fact that he beat Tarasenko's points record for his age in the KHL. The only thing that is questionable to me is how good is he offensively, rather than assuming there is none, and this is because the majority of his points (as Sandman pointed out a few times already) came at the start of the season.
So, was he simply not playing the style of game that his coach demanded and that works for the KHL, and he just took some time getting reeled-in? Was he filling-in for someone else who was injured, and then when that player returned, didn't get the same opportunity as he received? Was it a Darnell Nurse type of situation in which he just had a bunch of fluky, talentless points go in that shouldn't have, and then things dried out? You can't ascertain that from stat-watching.
The videos out there makes me more confident that this kid will be a great NHL'er, but it doesn't really tell me if he is offensive enough or not.
I have a personal hierarchy of 'defencemen types' that are elite at things. Let me break it down.
1) Makar types - elite everywhere and at everything.
2) Chara/Pronger types - elite at everything everywhere except the offence is only good, not elite
3) Karlsson types - elite offensively only
4) Regehr/Tanev/Hannan types - Elite defensively against anyone, but little offensive production.
Most defencemen don't have elite attributes. They may be great, but not quite elite. Sometimes I do think that defencemen that are good at everything even have more worth than my last box where it is only elite defensively.
I have Silayev's floor as Regehr. A defensive defencemen who you can throw against anyone in the NHL and feel confident that he will neutralize that player, whether it is against small skilled players or skilled power-forwards. Silayev is bigger, and a much better skater than Regehr was, and he seems to be further along in his development than Regehr was.
His ceiling my be Chara or Pronger. This puts him ahead of a guy like Parekh for me, who some scouts say IS Erik Karlsson. Some people may prefer Karlsson over Chara, but I am definitely not one of those. Makar? I pick Makar every single time over Chara. Karlsson? I pick Chara every single time. However, I will pick Karlsson every time over Regehr, and I love Regehr types.
9th overall might be a little rich if you think he is a Regehr. As much as I love him, there are probably better options at this point. So if you think at best Silayev is Regehr, then you probably don't want him here. However, if you think he is closer to Chara/Pronger on that spectrum, you will probably be shouting at the TV for Conroy to pick him.
My bet is that it is pointless talking about him, as I think he goes earlier. Watching a highlight video can only tell you so much, which is only a little more than stat-watching. I guess I am putting a bit more emphasis on things I have heard like: "Better skater than Hedman" and "elite defensively even at the KHL level" and "broke Tarasenko's record". To me, he seems like the ultimate wildcard, but I think he gets taken in the top 5.
