And my biggest pet peeve came when I saw The Village in the summertime..........after we got out, a different guy was babblin how it wasnt as good as Sixth Sense and Signs and blah blah blah......THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT MOVIES!!
I've heard from a number of people that The Village was a terrible movie. I think people go in with a certain expectation of what they think the movie should be, based on the director, or genre of movie. That's the worst attitude to go into a movie with. You're totally setting yourself up for dissapointment. Admittidly, The Village wasn't exactly what I expected either, but I actually thought it was pretty good. I loved the twist ending, and overall, I liked it far better than Signs.

I agree that Meet the Fockers was hilarious. A little different from the first (definitely cruder), but I laughed my ass off.
The village wasn't great at all but it was certainly better than any of the other M. Night Shamalyn (whatever his last name is). All the others really sucked, this one only kind of sucked.

More on topic though I think it is fair to compare his movies because they have the same sort of topics and themes.

I also think that it is okay to compare sequels to previous movies. Especially if it seems that the sequel was made soley to capitalize on the franchise/actors name and not as a independant movie with good entertainment points.
