Coloardo had MacKinnon. Eichel has been great for the Kings, but not a franchise level player. The rest of those teams didn't have a #1 centre who performed a role you couldn't replicate with wingers or overall depth.
IMO, the Flames had the players, they were missing coaching, leadership, proper player development, and a winning vibe.

It goes back prior to Crosby. The only 2 teams I recall having iffy #1C is St. Louis and Anaheim.
Eichel, Backstrom, Point are clear cut #1C.
Kopitar, and Towes.
We have never had a center the caliber of those players.
