The Devils were 2 points out of a playoff spot on Feb 14th (despite horrific goaltending). They were right there, and pretty much everyone agreed that they're a better team than DET and PHI, so the playoff spot was there for the taking.

But the persistent trade talks had to take a toll. And not getting a goalie eventually sank them. They went 11-18-1 from that point on, but let's not pretend that they weren't a good team. Fitz derailed their season, and that's why these rumours are right back on now (because the same problem still persists).
