Allen's value at the trade deadline was likely inflated because Fitzgerald was desperate to upgrade his goaltending and crapped the bed on acquiring Markstrom. There wasn't much of a goalie market at the time, so Hughes took advantage of him.
Also, the trade conditions have the draft pick New Jersey is sending to Montreal going from a 2025 third to a 2025 second if Allen plays at least 40 games next season and Allen's team makes the playoffs. The Devils will want to move him to a team where those conditions are unlikely to be met and the Flames without Markstrom are a pretty good candidate for that.
