I think we are significantly downplaying how much retention is worth and what it does for New Jersey.
Fills a hole. Gives them a cheap goalie. Cap space to fill out the lineup. It’s rare teams get a chance to do that in the cap era.
The only thing Fitz should get besides Markstrom is a slap in the face for being a baby.

I really hope the Flames are open to retention because it makes Markstrom that much more appealing. He's 34 years old so Jersey likely knows the window with him is shorter. Saros and Ullmark are both younger and provide a longer runway. Both have one less year but their age makes them more appealing to re-sign. If all it takes is some money to get a core piece for your future it seems crazy not to do it.
