If I was the GM of the Devils I would not be too worried about Markstrom's ability to be a 4 year solution. They would have two years to figure out if he is the solution and then they could probably sign him to short term, possibly one year contracts. It is a lower risk option than committing to a goalie for 6 years. But the following guys recently performed until they were 40 or oler.
Ryan Miller performed well until he was 40
Dwayne Roloson performed well until he was 41
Craig Anderson was pretty good until he was 41
Eddie Balfour was good until he was in his 40's
It would not be unheard of for Markstrom to be a quality starting goalie through 2028.
