1986-87
A unique event conceived by entrepreneur Marcel Aubut the President of the Quebec Nordiques highlighted the 1986-87 season. Held in Quebec City, Rendez-Vous '87 featured the NHL All-Stars and the Soviet National Team. The result was a unique event that no one would forget. The NHL team won the first game 4-3 on February 11th, and then lost the finale 5-3 on February 13th.
When Quebec was designated to host the NHL All-Star game, Aubut decided that the annual event should be different, so he proposed a 2 game series against the dreaded Soviets.
Aubut felt that the annual event shouldn't just be a event that appealed to NHL fans, but an event that became must see and appealed to fans outside of the traditional hockey markets. This, he felt would be a great way to promote the sport.
NHL owners were both skeptical and intrigued, they weren't sure that the event would sell but they allowed Aubut to proceed, and he turned the event into more then just 2 hockey games, it was a gigantic cultural event centred around the game. there were black tie dinners, fashion shows, rock concerts, and celebrities. The hockey Hall of fame went on the road and put on display.
The game itself featured excellent hockey with a meaning featuring the best players in the world. The series opened with a ceremonial face off between Wayne Gretzky and Viacheslav Fetisov and despite some questionable officiating and cringe worth post game awards, it was a exhilarating event made better by the split in games.
When it was over, hockey fans turned back to the NHL where the Oilers were putting on a show of their own. Gertzky, Kurri and Messier put on a show of their own as they powered to a 50-24-6 record to take the regular season crown.
The Oilers still stinging from their loss last year powered through the playoffs, the destroyed the Kings in 5 games in the opening round including a 13-3 traumatic beat down in game 2. After sweeping the Jets in the Smythe Division finals, the Oilers beat up Detroit in 5 games and entered the finals against the Broad Street Bullies.
Sather aware of the flyers nasty physical game countered with Kevin McClelland, Marty McSorley and rookie Kelly Buchberger. The two teams beat on each other for 7 low scoring games. But the Oilers could only be contained for so long. The Oilers dominated the Flyers but couldn't open more then a 1 goal gap until late in the game when they put it away with a goal by Glenn Anderson as he beat Ron Hextall with a slapshot.
When the final buzzer sounded the Oilers had redeemed themselves and won their 3rd cup in 4 years.
