Ok I'll give you Jesus of suburbia, it was a neat experimentation on their part.
I saw American Idiot as them adopting the superior production value of other big pop punk bands at the time more than a huge departure.
That alone can draw appeal out of bands that people (general mainstrem audiences) weren't seeing before.
They already had iconic anthemic tracks before that like Minority. The production value was just lagging a bit behind the rest of the game.
The most recent album pretty much comes full circle. It's a lot like the old stuff but with less of the edgy-ness of their younger years. Still good. But it demonstrates how evolution wasn't really a prominent feature of the band
