As a fan of the Calgary Flames, as long as there's been Calgary Flames, that's the bitter pill. They've never been able to commit to the right people - going all the way back to the 1990s sell off... or even Brett Hull (though that didn't cost us that time). When you dig into the why, it seems to be an almost Ballard level of ownership interference in the running of the team. Fear of spending too much on a player, or setting a precedent. Blame me of hindsight bias, but a lot of their decision that were fumbled were pretty damn easy to get right, they had to go out of their way to get them wrong.
It's their toy, they can play with it however they like, but I don't know any other team in any sport that gets it wrong so often.
That's why this rebuild will be interesting, just as the last one was. We'll get many of the right pieces again, get attached to them and that will be fun to watch until the Flames #### it up.
