They were asking me why I can't cheer for the Oilers, as they're Canada's team after all, and I've lived in Edmonton for the past 2.5 years. I said that I could not bring myself to support them because of their rivalry with the Flames, and that I'm loyal to Calgary, even if they suck right now. I asked them if they would support the Flames if they were in the same position as the Oilers right now. Got a quiet "no." My point just proven.

My follow-up question was if they were still die-hard fans during their 7+ years that they sucked and drafted #1 a historical 4 times in 6 years. I got told that wasn't a fair question, as every team has periods when they suck and it's hard to cheer for them.

Another point just proven: it's really easy to jump on the bandwagon, especially when all the media gets behind your team. That's why this whole "Canada's team" concept is kind of dumb. There's no "America's team" or "California's team" or "Florida's team." Everyone wants their own team to win, for their very own selfish reasons. That's what it means to be a dedicated pro sports fan.

Go Stars
This exactly. I can’t even keep track of how many times since the playoffs started I’ve had to explain to fairweather casual oilers fans why I can’t cheer for a rival team having been born and raised in Calgary, cheering for the flames since day 1.
