USL is handcuffed from ever really competing with MLS because of its USSF Div 2 status, and Concacaf is never going to allow two D1 leagues. An upset win by Sacramento doesn’t bother MLS because it’s not direct competition, and if anything, if the market gets strong enough, they’ll accept an application. That’s not an option for the Canadian markets so long as CPL exists and thrives.
Cavalry, Ottawa, and Forge in particular have the ownership, market size, and quality management to potentially compete with the bottom end of MLS long term (after all, all three markets have reportedly looked into MLS franchises in the past). The more successful those teams are, the more likely the risk is that Concacaf takes a long look at the Whitecaps and CF Montreal’s exemptions… even if that is at least a decade away and a lot needs to go right.
Also, didn’t MLS at this stage still have football lines in some stadia and gimmicky centre field penalty shootouts?
