Kotkaniemi starts the majority of his shifts in the offensive zone. Backlund does not. And didn't at Kotkaniemi's age either.
The only reason Kotkaniemi even gets the points he has is because he is given all of the high ground he possibly can.
His underlying numbers are good, but they should be when you start a significant majority of your shifts in the offensive zone again middle 6ers.
Backlund starts the majority of his shifts in the D zone against the top 6. And has for his entire career.
