I went and saw Meet the Fockers last night and immeadiately following my buddy goes on about how much it sucked and that it wasnt as good as the original and blah blah blah......I aint defending the movie, it wasnt that good, I just hate people who see a movie and automatically compare it to something else similar. The director wasnt trying to make it the same the original, he was trying somehthig different with the same characters. And my biggest pet peeve came when I saw The Village in the summertime..........after we got out, a different guy was babblin how it wasnt as good as Sixth Sense and Signs and blah blah blah......THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT MOVIES!!!!!! Dont compare them because they are made by the same guy, I mean, do you compare ET and Saving Private Ryan because Spielberg did both of them......That just doesnt make sense to me and now I am whining so I will stop.

What do you guys think???? Do you know what I mean?????
I think it depends on the director, and what types of movies he makes. Whether or not you can classify him as an auteur, and whether or not his films have some sort of collective theme or unifying presence behind them.

For example, while it might be silly to compare "Rudy" with "Remember the Titans" (using examples from the sports movie thread) or "E.T." with "Saving Private Ryan," I have no problem with your buddy comparing Shyamalan's movies to each other, or comparing say, "Vertigo" to "North By Northwest."

Comparing movies with similar themes can provoke interesting discussion, but like you say, it doesn't apply in all cases.
