They noted during the game that it was called high sticking and speculated that it was for exactly this reason (so they didn't have to eject him). Tochet was upset on the bench as well.
A joke to call that obvious cross-check a high stick in order to minimize the punishment but par for the course with the NHL's
gaslighting game management.
