I am not 100% sure, but I think going into the program prevents contract termination.

I assume the 6 months without pay thing is more administrative than anything. The suspension could be longer. He'll have to demonstrate that he met his treatment objectives and then apply for reinstatement. Six months might be really optimistic if the problem is as serious as it seems.
