I remember when the Flames acquired Phil Housley, I think the second time, Brian Sutter said something about Housley being a one-dimensional player, but it was a dimension the team really needed. That's kind of my thought with Kuzmenko as well.
Whether he wants to discuss an extension or not, I don't know. I do think that short of signing a real sweetheart of a deal, Conroy is probably more inclined to keep building his value through the season and then trading him at the deadline. Hopefully he can add to that Lindholm trade tree and get another 1st rounder if Kuzmenko can carry on where he left off last season.
Conroy mentioned wanting players in a specific age group and not wanting to sign older UFAs to long term deals at this point in the Flames building process. So far, Conroy has done everything he said he would and I think he sticks to his plan. Kuzmenko will almost certainly want a long term deal and isn't in that age group, so unless the deal is a real discount, I don't see it happening.
