IMO, it's more that winning even 1 cup is catching lightning in a bottle. A coach who's won in the past is probably more likely to win again, as compared to some random other coach. But even a great coach is still very unlikely to win a cup. Only one team can win each year.

New Jersey won 3 cups in relatively close years. 1995, 2000 and 2003. All three wins were with a different coach. Lemaire, Robinson and Burns.
How much does a coach contribute to a team winning? Probably not as much as a coach can contribute to a team losing.
