My understanding is that the long fingernail (ie: Pinky) isn't about good luck. It's a representation of status. It's similar to the value of light colored (no tan) skin.
The reason being is that those that are poor and work manual jobs cannot maintain long nails without them breaking. You also couldn't maintain light skin if you worked in the fields.
Pinky nail only might be the modern approach to this, but I dunno.
