When you look at the big 4, you can pretty much guarantee that Matthew’s and Nylander aren’t going anywhere. So that leaves Marner and Tavares as the odd men out, but in terms of the best return for Toronto, Marner makes far more sense than a downward trajectory Tavares.
Goaltending and Defence are the two big holes for Toronto with absolutely nothing in the pipeline. The only way to fix this is free agency (no cap room) or Trades which leaves Marner firmly as the odd man out no matter how you spin it. I’m almost certain he’s moved along with a coaching change.

Kipper said he wanted to stay with the Flames, had a NMC, and he stayed with the Flames. That is usually how it works when the player wants to stay on a team and has a NMC. All of your examples are players who did not have NMC’s.
