Before the "suck and draft one" crowd chimes in I know...and hopefully both things happen but IMO the Flames don't have that luxury to just be absolutely terrible like SJ.
Even in the worst of the worst days we had Theo, Iggy, ect. IF someone could get Marner at a value price it could be smart, I never buy the can't play in the playoffs crap...it also takes offence to get there. My guess is Marner is on a deep run with a US team within a couple years...Leaf fans Pokemon face.

I don’t think you have to worry about a SJ style rebuild unless the Flames force themselves down that path by making terrible short sighted decisions which I do not see happening under Conroy at least in the short term future.
The Flames tried and failed miserably to replace their former stars by adding stars from other teams. While Kadri has been full marks for his first 2 years here he is more of a complimentary piece than a star and we don’t need to talk about Huberdeau.
This team does need to draft its next star and trading for a 27 year old who needs an 8 year deal with a raise on his current $11M cap hit is not the way to add a star.
Sucking for 5-6 years when a new building is guaranteed is not a death blow to the franchise. Another couple decades of mediocrity is just as dangerous.
I am okay with the team chasing Hamilton like deals to add long term prices who will impact the team immediately but they need to draft and grow some of their own stars first. Conroy did imply if a teams has a strong young asset available for trade under 23 those were the types of deals he wanted to make.
