It seems in retrospect that Dubas was the wrong guy to go. He wanted to make big changes after last year, was pushing to move Marner before his full NMC kicked in, and Shanahan overruled and then fired Dubas.
Marner looked even more checked out than usual all season, he was likely ready to go last year. Now, the returns will not be as good, but Marner will absolutely waive for a trade to the right market, preferably someplace with zero hockey media and even lower expectations (hello Anaheim!)
All the talk about Tre, Dubas, Keefe, but it seems apparent that Shanahan is the real problem with this organization. He's already gone, will be official before the end of the week.
