Not that it would happen because they're a bottom two team of the ones remaining, but technically they should've never been granted that McDavid lotto win to begin with, considering how the rules are today.
The league doesn't want more than 2 wins close together for any team, evidently.
The only reason they're relevant at all is by slipping through the welfare cracks by sheer dumb luck before the rules cracked down.
What they've "built" around that wouldn't suffice around any other player. The job Holland and his predecessors have done is like a C-grade at best. Hence the zero cups, and why it's more than likely to remain that way until their departure.
Sometimes you need elite players to overcome an opponent (see COL), but to go all the way requires a well rounded team with contributions from every one. The Oilers simply do not have that, and are one of the worst I've seen at even strength in a playoff scenario. When the PPs dry up, they'll fall short.
