Yeah it's a benefit of hindsight.
Coming out of 19-20 and 20-21 seasons very few people on here wanted to give Gaudreau more than $8M. More people wanted to trade him than re-sign him.
Easy to say now it was low balling, but really the market was a bit soft for wingers at the time. Even if you include the 18-19 season which was his career year he had 206 points over his prior 208 games...so averaging 81 points per season.
If the Flames were offering $8M per season on an extension that was probably pretty close to being fair value in the 2021 offseason. Gabriel Landeskog took $7M that offseason to help his team win.
Gaudreau bet on himself, was able to cash in, choose to take the contract in Columbus.
