They're not mutually exclusive, however big, strong players that show a top 6 forward/top 4 D-man potential when up for the draft end up being drafted accordingly, aka they're gold.
So the contention is when you get down into the second round and beyond and a GM sees a possible pick where the smaller player is showing way more statistically but takes the bigger player because size matters. Size does matter a lot in the NHL but not if the 5'10 player puts up 20 goals in the NHL and the big guy never gets a cup of coffee.
