Their ACTIVE ROSTER (the exact words I used) is ~$10.75M over the cap.
Their dressed lineup is $750k over the cap, but they have $10M in healthy scratches sitting in the pressbox that they can call on at any point in time.
Name another team with a $10M pool of healthy scratches they can draw from to plug injuries. That's half an AHL team's worth of salary travelling, practicing, working out with the team, in the shape of 7 healthy NHLers waiting to be called on. If you think that's a "non-factor" then maybe you haven't thought of what a lot of teams have to go through when someone gets hurt.
Ps. The Leafs' active roster is $86M, and they actually have over $14M still on LTIR (no miraculous Game 1 appearance for any of those guys). Plus they're without Nylander, who didn't play tonight and isn't on LTIR.
