With how the season transpired and how the future is looking, Backlund's legacy as Flames captain isn't going to be nearly to the level he/we were expecting/hoping, so maybe that also changes his mind a bit on wanting to stay.

Sure, that was a locker clean up date last year. Since their has been the King Clancy win, and the extension/captaincy, and passing Gio for second all time in Games Played.
If my man wanted to cup chase, he doesn't sign that extension.
