The Devils could have had Markstrom in time to save their season, but they dithered and dithered and farted around, and by deadline day they were out of the race. The smart move would have been to acquire a goalie as soon as they knew they needed one.

Yep. I was frustrated that Markstrom wasn't moved at the deadline but my frustration lies with New Jersey, not Conroy. What an inept attempt to shore up their goaltending when it was critical to making the playoffs.
They literally ran out their own clock on getting Markstrom in there to start winning games.
