Goalies are a bit different. If you haven't got a decent starting goalie, you can't just wait till the deadline to add one. By that time, your season is already lost.
The Devils could have had Markstrom in time to save their season, but they dithered and dithered and farted around, and by deadline day they were out of the race. The smart move would have been to acquire a goalie as soon as they knew they needed one.
