From this angle, the merger can easily judge the flow of traffic and get to the
very short merge zone at a speed matching traffic, although they may not have a gap when they get there. If they're up to speed though, I'll make room.

You know what screws things up? That idiot in the streetview image there (in the merge lane) who's hitting his brakes for NO REASON! That guy needs to get off the road.
