If Kuzmenko plays so well that his value is high enough for a 1st, you absolutely trade him. If he's only playing decent enough where you can get a 2nd or 3rd, is he really worth re-signing at that point? I'd still take the pick and let him walk.
Ya he has high end skill and you need players even during a rebuild but rather get a more defensively well rounded plug and let our rookies be the ones with a longer offensive leash and room for mistakes on the back end. The only reason you even give Kuzmenko that leash right now is to pump his value in an effort to dump NOT re-sign him.
No matter how I look at it, if our philosophy is to start actually maximizing on assets instead of what we've done for years, you trade him at the deadline next year.
