Honestly, what would it take to get another pick in the top 15 of this upcoming draft? Ottawa, New Jersey, and Detroit all come to mind as potential teams that might be willing to make a move to get better right now. If Arizona went on a run to finish the season and ended up with a pick outside the top 8, they might fit in that group as well (but I doubt it).
Assuming the flames won’t trade any of their young players (Zary, Coronato, Wolf and Pelletier), I think their top trade pieces as far as value would be, in order:
1. Andersson
2. Markstrom (50% retained)
3. Vancouver’s 2024 first round pick
4. Coleman (50% retained)
5. Sharangovich
The only single asset on that list that I think could potentially return a pick in the range of 15th to 10th overall is Andersson. A top 3 defenceman in his prime with 2 years left on his deal at a very reasonable cap hit. Good leader as well. The flames likely have very little desire to trade him especially with how depleted their defense has become so, if they did, a pick in the top half of the first round would not be an unreasonable return. The free agent market and trade market is thin for right-shot defencemen as well because they are so highly coveted.
I think there are two teams with potentially the most motivation to trade a top 15 draft pick for someone like Andersson:
1. Ottawa - if they keep playing well to finish the season and end up with a pick outside the top 7/8, I could see them making a move like this. They are desperate to get better and especially need to improve their right-side defence. They have 4 years left before Tkachuk becomes a UFA and potentially 3 years until they might have to trade him if he does not re-sign the offseason before going to UFA. Likely any player they pick outside the top 8 in this draft would not be an impact player before then so if they want to try to make their current core achieve any form of success, this move would make a lot of sense.
2. Detroit - if they miss the playoffs, they will have a very frustrated fanbase. They have been rebuilding for a long time and they have a wealth of young prospects in the cupboard. They need to start becoming a regular playoff team and their young defence could use Andersson as a veteran in their top 4. Because they have so many prospects from their rebuild, they could easily afford to give up a pick in this draft for a player that makes them more competitive now.
If the flames end up picking in the top 6 of this draft and could also swing a big trade for another top 15 pick by trading Andersson, I would definitely consider it.
If New Jersey is still hot for Markstrom in the offseason, I would offer him with full retention if it meant the flames could get Jersey’s 2024 first round pick… but I imagine that is a big ask for a 34 year old goaltender even if he had a good season. They might be willing to include a conditional 1st in next year’s draft but it will be tough to get them to trade such a high pick now. Maybe if the flames offered Vancouver’s 2024 first round pick as well, that might sweeten the return enough for New Jersey to go for it.
3 picks in the top 15 would be awesome. Likely a pipe dream but fun to consider.
