According to google,
the camp in real life was liberated by the 14th Armored Division, commanded by Major Gen. Albert Cowper Smith.
While he was a One Star (Brigadier General) prior, by the time of liberation, he was a 2-star (Major General).
No one else in the 14th Armored had a star at the time.
