One of the tidbits that came out in the long list of rumours was that the compensation for retention was not enough. Sounded like the Flames were fine retaining over multiple years, but that they have a figure in their head as to how much they should be compensated for it.
If it was 2 million a season, I would actually expect MORE than what Monahan received. Money was about right (Monahan just over 6 million a season), but the Flames would also be further hamstrung with using up one of only 3 retention spots over that duration., They could potentially miss out on an opportunity to act as a middle-man between two teams, plus they may even have a deal nixed because they don't have a retention spot left to make a deal happen (like Kuzmenko, or whomever else they trade in the next off-season).
There is the cost for retention, plus (IMO) the cost of using up a retention spot over multiple years.
