That doesn't make sense to me. How is a player not part of hockey ops? What was Holtz going to be asking for anyway?
I think that Conroy may have told them he really wanted Mercer and when Mercer was never going to be on the table, the alternative deal wasn't good enough for upstairs.
Conroy really wanting Mercer makes sense based on what he's said about positional needs, and how he's made his trades.
