I think we need to get over this idea that the Devils made this great offer and the Flames rejected it. If it was a really good offer, the Flames would have taken it. As for the going to Markstrom to waive, at some point, the Flames and Devils were going to have to check with him on the possibility of waiving. The fact they went to him does not mean the offer was ever close to what the Flames wanted. Something was probably lost in the communication between Conroy -> Agent -> Markstrom which led Markstrom to believe a deal was close.
It was sort of a joke... but if it happens, cool.

I also think the 2024 wasn't on the table since it would have to be protected based on where they are in the standings. So they wouldnt want to risk the 2025 being unprotected. I dont think its crazy to think that the pick could be on the table this summer rather than Mercer being the line in the sand.
