NJD alleged offer occurred around a month ago.
Before then, Markstrom was saving approximately a goal per game above expectation (truly elite play)
Since then, Markstrom has a negative GSAx, a 0.878, and a 3.5 GAA (this sample is almost exclusively WITH hanifin, and mostly WITH tanev, before it gets mentioned)
Couple that with prices on expensive cap hit players dropping in the offseason (because there are an abundance of players who can be acquired using nothing but cap space, like how calgary acquired markstrom in theh first place). For example, NJD may choose to try and spend that money on a much needed LD like Hanifin or Skjei.
So:
-less term and his most valuable year
-his play has dropped
-more potential sellers
-high cap hit assets become less valuable
-less pressing needs as goaltending issues are not actively prevalent (and previous year goaltending does not guarantee next year goaltending, as flames fans should know better than anyone with how up and down markstrom has been year to year)
-Free agents available with 0 cost
